東洋ライト級王者時代、池袋の路上で弟にからんだヤクザ8人を相手に喧嘩をし、
たった一人で全員KOしたという事件を起こし（この事件の新聞の見出しは「石松、場外で8人KO」だった）、
現行犯逮捕された（後に正当防衛を認められ釈放された）。
その時の事情聴取でガッツは「チャンピオンは“いついかなる時でも誰の挑戦でも受けなければならない”と賞状に書いてある」と供述したため、
これ以降チャンピオンに渡される賞状からその文言が削除されている（本来は「組まれたマッチメイクを受ける義務」の規定である）。
ちなみにさすがのガッツでも8人と同時に喧嘩をしても勝ち目はないと判断したのか、
細い路地に誘い込み8人に対して常に「1対1」で勝負して勝ちを収めた。
